college Golf Walk-Ons?
I am a senior 08-09 im a 10 handicap and playing towards a 7-8 by the end of the season..i just started playing on my golf team last year and made it this year.i was curious if like a d2 school like Florida southern had golf tryouts…i also am friends with an alumni and former golfer from that school…do they have walk ons (tryouts) and if not what other d2 schools have tryouts
I played in college at a similar level my last two years of school. After we had qualified, the school gave us a half scholarship. They split scholarships among the players and schools do that quite a bit now.
My suggestion is that you contact the coach at your intended school and ask him his procedures. Some coaches at smaller schools encourage walk ons; some discourage walk ons because they have their scholarship players already. For example, when I graduated college I had one year of eligibility left and I went to law school. I asked the coach at my new school if I could walk on. He said yes, knowing that any one was allowed to walk on in any sport but he was brutally honest in saying that he would not play me, even if I qualified. He said he only played his scholarship players.
Finally, a word of advice. While a high single digit handicap might allow you to qualify for high school team, it usually will NOT be enough for a college team. My suggestion is if you really want to do this, is to practice your butt off, get lessons, and see if you can get into LOW single digit handicap range before walking on. If you can, great!
