Why do I only hit a Golf Ball 280 yards with 119 mph club head speed?
I went to golf mart today to get fitted for some new clubs. While i was there they measured my club head speed. A lot of guys I play with are often curious as to how fast it is, and why I don’t hit the ball further. My speeds were 116 mph, 115 mph, and 119mph. Shouldn’t i be hitting the ball over 300 yds with that kind of speed?
To carry a ball 300 yards, your swing speed will have to be 125 mph, that is with standard equipment. Some contributing factors of overall distance include Loft, Launch angle, Ball speed and ball spin.
Loft: if your loft is to high, your carry distance will increase, but your roll will decrease.
Launch Angle: Works with Loft.
Ball spin: If your ball spin is to high, it will cause the ball to rise higher and drop hard, thus decreasing your your roll and over all distance.
Ball speed: Is a direct result of ball compression and expansion. When that heavy club head transfers its momentum to the high energy, light ball, the “conservation of momentum” principle says the velocity of the ball must increase. more ball speed = more distance. If that misplaced club force is causing the ball to spin sideways, it is not compressing the ball and “pushing” it down the fairway. What a waste! Compresses the ball more efficiently and therefore generate more distance (and control).
Now that you have been club fitted, look at getting ball fitted now.
The Pro will match a ball that will fit your swing style to improve your Carry distance as well as your over all distance. That ball your playing may not be the best ball for you.
Point in case. Me for example. I was bound and determined to play the best(highest priced) ball on the market. I had good distance with it, 270-275 yards carry + 10-12% roll(295-300 total distance).
I asked the Shop Pro to help me with a new ball selection and I hit every ball that he had available.
Come to find out that Bridgestone is my brand. R33 to be more specific. I gained an average of 12 more yards carry and better roll.
I have dropped my handicap by 5 strokes from a 16 to an 11 just by changing ball brands.
When I get my new clubs and get comfortable with them, I will get re-fitted for a new ball as well.
