What are some good quality Cheap Golf Clubs for leftys?
My husband told me he wants a new set of gold clubs for Christmas. I have been looking online and some clubs are close to $600! Is this an average cost? What are some good quality name brand golf items? Does anyone know where I can go to buy some reasonably priced golf goods? I’m all for getting people what they want for Christmas, but I can afford to spend over $1,000.00 on a few gold clubs that won’t get used most of the year.
This is going to sound like an ad, but I don’t care. I went through a “gotta have name brands! it’s the ONLY way to be a REAL golfer!!!” phase a few years ago. I started to get into custom clubmaking, and realized there’s a plethora of other outlets: Golfsmith, GolfWorks and Hireko were the three that caught my eye. I went with Hireko because:
A) their prices are better
B) they have more lefty options (I’m a lefty, as well)
I bought all mine as components, which is cheaper, but you can have his assembled. You’ll pay a little more- even more if you upgrade the shaft and club, but you’ll just be paying for a name. I went with the Acer XK line: driver, 3 wood, 19* hybrid, Standard 4 and 5 irons and Pro 6-PW; the wedges are Acer XB. I really, really like them. They arrived on spec (something even the “big boys” have a problem with, because of human error that can’t be helped) which was a pleasant surprise. They feel good, they look good and sound good to me- all the way down the line. I’ve been playing them since December ’09- at the range while the snow was falling and on the course since.
The one thing I did different was, I custom-fitted mine. I tweaked the grip sizes, flattened the lie angle of the short irons, and tipped the shafts differently (among other things). That’s where your husband will see a marked improvement over his old set- a custom fit set will help mitigate your misses and allow for consistency. That’s why this should be a joint venture. It’ll be cheaper to get him fitted and into clubs that will be right for him the moment he gets them; it’ll be more expensive to buy a set, find out they aren’t right and get them retro-fitted.
